Cllr Kaya Comer-Schwartz, Leader of Islington Council

New Year message from Cllr Kaya Comer-Schwartz 2024

As we welcome in the New Year, I have no doubt I am not the only one who looks to 2024 with a sense of hope.

Many of us enjoyed the recent festive season and the opportunity to spend time with loved ones. But I know it will have also have been a tough time for some in Islington.

Last year gave us many ups and downs. Together we faced local, national and global events which troubled us and our community, the impact of which can not be underestimated.

And yet, we saw neighbours supporting neighbours, volunteers stepping up, and council staff working tirelessly to keep us safe and cared for. We witnessed acts of kindness on every street corner, from barbers’ shops to community hubs, reminding us that it’s Islington’s community spirit that makes it the place we all know and love.

As we move into 2024 many of the issues we face will continue to focus our minds. We will fight for a fairer financial settlement from Government to allow us to achieve our aim of a more equal Islington.

Our relentless efforts to tackle inequality will not be cowed, nor will our missions to invest in our thriving local economy. Everyone deserves a safe place to call home in a greener, healthier, child-friendly place. The council will always stand shoulder to shoulder with local people, supporting, listening, investing in and working together across the borough to make a real difference to all our lives and livelihoods.

May the new year bring you and your loved ones joy, prosperity, and good health. May it be a year of shared triumphs, a year where Islington's light shines even brighter.

Happy New Year, Islington.
