Win free hire of Islington Assembly Hall

Local community groups and charities have the chance to win one of ten free hires of Islington Assembly Hall on Upper Street.– but they have to be quick as the deadline for applications is Sunday 25 January.

The Islington Council scheme will help local groups and give them access to one of the most sought after venues in the borough. As the venue was built with the local community in mind, only applications from groups that focus on arts and regeneration; children and young people; diversity or older people are eligible for this fantastic prize.

Last year’s lucky winners held events as diverse as a tea dance for International Older People’s Day, a spring ball showcasing arts in the borough (as part of the Word Festival) and a celebration of the sporting achievements of local school children. at the venue – described by the Guardian as “one of London’s best mid-sized venues”.

Cllr Rakhia Ismail, executive member for community development, said, “The free hire scheme is a great chance for the local community to use one of the finest venues in the heart of London, for free. We’ve had a number of high profile music acts at Islington Assembly Hall, but it is the community group use that makes more of an impact for residents. I encourage all local groups looking for a venue to hire in 2015, to apply to this scheme."

Islington Assembly Hall – a Grade II-listed building – has been described by the Guardian as “one of London’s best mid-sized venues”. The 420 seat hall boasts stage lighting and a fully-sprung ballroom dance floor. It is also fully disabled accessible, with a hearing loop and the latest high specification audio-visual technology.

More information can be found at www.islington.gov.uk/islingtonassemblyhall and applications must be in by Sunday 25 January 2015.

Notes for editors:

Since being extensively refurbished in 2010 by Islington Council, it has become one of the capital’s most exciting live music venues, with a host of big names (such as the Foo Fighters, Fall Out Boy and First Aid Kit) and up-and-coming artists playing sell-out shows.
The flexible space also holds other events open to the public – such as film screenings and sales – and is available to hire for corporate, private and community events, such as weddings and conferences.

The grade II listed building first opened in 1930 and today retains much of its art deco interior and original architectural detail, including its magnificent stage.
