Residents in two Islington streets are being offered the chance to apply for a secure bicycle parking space on the street in a new pilot project that could be rolled out across the borough.

The award-winning and popular Bikehangar units have been installed in Crayford Road, Holloway, and Hanley Road in Tollington ward. Residents can apply online to rent one of the unit’s six spaces.

Cllr Claudia Webbe, executive member for environment and transport, launched the pilot scheme this week and visited the Crayford Road site.

She said: “Bikehangars offer residents a safe and effective way to protect their bikes from the weather and theft in places where storage space is at a premium.

“The provision of secure on-street cycle parking will provide peace of mind and encourage more residents to take up cycling, which is healthier and better for the environment.

“If the pilot is successful and we can obtain external funding, this could pave the way for more Bikehangars in our residential streets.”

The addition of Bikehangars compliments the secure bicycle storage already available on many Islington council estates, as well as the cycle stands that accommodate more than 700 bicycles around the borough for residents and visitors alike.

The Crayford Road unit has been installed on a built-out kerb near the junction with Tabley Road, out of the way of pedestrians. Another Bikehangar is installed outside Shelley Court in Hanley Road, taking up just half a car parking space.

Residents interested in more information or applying for a place are asked to email publicrealm@islington.gov.uk.
