£500 funds for neighbours to arrange summer get-togethers

Community groups, friends and neighbours are being encouraged to arrange tea parties, picnic lunches or just a good old chinwag as Islington embraces the Great Get-Together this summer.

The Big Lunch, the UK’s annual get-together for neighbours, is this year joining forces with the Jo Cox Foundation to launch the Great Get-Together over the weekend of 17 and 18 June. The aim is to encourage neighbours and communities to celebrate and connect with each other.

Islington Council is backing the initiative with funding for community groups to kickstart their event, or help ensure it goes with a swing! Local groups can apply for a grant of up to £500 from funds set aside by the council.

Sean McLaughlin, the council’s Corporate Director of Housing and Adult Social Services, said:
“We will be delighted to support initiatives that bring residents together and enable them to enjoy and celebrate what we all share in common. As a community organisation you may want to organise a community picnic in a local park or community setting, tea dances, coffee mornings or a party.”

The application process is open now, and all requests for funding must be received by Monday 8 May.
