Alison Stuart to join Islington Council as Director of Law and Governance and Monitoring Officer

Alison Stuart is to join Islington Council as Director of Law and Governance and Monitoring Officer. 

Alison joins from the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, where she is the Senior Legal Adviser across all council services, including as a Non-Executive Director for its subsidiary companies and is also Monitoring Officer for the ELWA. Alison directly leads a diverse portfolio of teams including the legal, elections, democratic services, regulatory and enforcement teams. Alison is also a member of the council’s Senior Leadership Team and is a passionate advocate of diversity and equality.  

An experienced lawyer and monitoring officer, Alison has provided expert counsel to local authorities across London, Hertfordshire, Essex and Peterborough, and brings a track record of strong leadership, governance and grip.  

Alison said: “I am delighted to have been chosen to be Islington’s new Director of Law and Governance and look forward to bringing my skills and experience to such a forward-thinking, innovative council with a real vision on delivering the best for its staff and residents.” 

Cllr Diarmaid Ward, Islington Council’s Executive Member for Finance, Planning and Performance, said: “Alison has very strong senior leadership experience, and we’re very pleased she will join our team as we work with our residents to create a more equal future for Islington.” 

The appointment was ratified by council at its meeting last night (Thursday). 

Marie Rosenthal will continue as Interim Director of Law and Governance at Islington until Alison joins the council later this year.
