And the winner is.... Islington teens' favourite author revealed
Islington's favourite read - as voted by teenagers across the borough - has been announced at a special ceremony during 'Islington Reads Week', 2-8 March.
On Tuesday 3 March, students and staff from Holloway School, Mount Carmel School and St Mary Magdalene Academy gathered at Waterstone's bookshop on Islington Green where US author Julie Berry's 'All the Truth That's in Me' was named as the borough's favourite.
Shortlisted nominee author Meg Rosoff ('Picture me Gone') also attended and discussed her work.
Islington Reads Week also sees an extension of the popular book exchange initiative, with giant book swaps taking place at Nag's Head Shopping Centre on Tuesday 3 March and in Chapel Market on World Book Day, Thursday 5 March, 10am - 12pm.
Cllr Janet Burgess Islington Council's executive member for health and wellbeing said:
"Congratulations to Julie Berry for winning our teen readers popular vote. It's really good to see teenagers so interested and engaged in modern books.
"To get more people reading we need to make books available more easily and in different formats - which is what 'Islington Reads' is all about.
"Providing popular titles in leisure centres, adventure playgrounds and offices hugely extends the reach of our library service."
Commenting on her Islington Teen Reads win, California-based Julie Berry posted a message of thanks on the internet, saying: "I am thrilled, honoured and excited beyond belief. I was so tickled when I heard the news. I am sending a big hug from afar."
During March, book swaps will also be extended to the Drovers Centre pensioners' lunch club in N7, the Hilldrop Community Centre, N7 and the Council's Customer Contact Centre at 222 Upper St, N1. Residents visiting for parking permit renewals, money advice or to see planning applications can pick up a novel while they are waiting.
The idea is part of the Council's successful initiative to bring books to new and unexpected places - including leisure centres and adventure playgrounds.
During Islington Reads Week Islington Council is promoting reading in all its forms via libraries, book swaps, eBooks and eAudio.
Islington Library Service is running a membership campaign to get more residents to join up. Big prizes include an iPad, shopping vouchers, free tours of Emirates Stadium and more.
