Islington Council’s new fairer energy company Angelic Energy has hit the 1,000 mark just five months after signing up its first customer.

Angelic Energy, London’s first municipal energy provider in more than a century, is focused on offering fair gas and electricity prices and helping the capital’s most vulnerable households.

The not-for-profit energy provider was set up by Islington Council last October as part of its push to reduce fuel poverty – one of its key priorities. The council estimates that one in five Islington households is currently living in fuel poverty.

Around 1,000 households so far have signed up to Angelic Energy, of which 600 are for dual fuel, with the remainder opting for either gas or electricity to be supplied.

Cllr Claudia Webbe, Islington Council’s executive member for environment and transport, said: “I’m proud that so many people are already feeling the benefit of Angelic Energy’s great-value energy prices.

“Angelic was brought about by our determination to help those most in need, some of whom are genuinely struggling with day-to-day decisions on whether to heat or eat due to the inflated prices charged by some energy companies.

“We wanted to help create a fairer Islington for all, and Angelic Energy’s success so far is a clear sign that we are doing just that.”

Angelic Energy aims to offer some of the best-value standard and Pay As You Go tariffs available on the market, helping to keep people warm and well, coupled with outstanding customer service and simple-to-understand billing – a real and fairer alternative to the “Big Six” energy companies.

Residents on Pay As You Go energy deals are among the least likely households to switch to another, better-value provider. But Angelic Energy aims to give them the confidence to switch, in the knowledge that it is owned by Islington Council, a name they know they can trust.

Angelic Energy reinvests any surplus it makes in providing good-value energy, good customer service and a fairer deal for all.

It offers competitive prices, too – customers switching to Angelic Energy’s Standard Fixed tariff could save up to £275 per year*.

* Customers on Angelic Energy’s Standard Fixed tariff could save up to £275 per year. This calculation is based on a comparison with the mean average of the standard variable tariffs offered by the six biggest suppliers of energy, for a medium-use, dual-fuel customer living in London who pays by Direct Debit and receives paperless billing. Medium use for comparison is defined as 12,500 kWh of gas consumption and 3,100 kWh of electricity consumption per year. Comparison made on 22 January, 2018. Prices may change.

Despite the common perception that Islington is a wealthy borough, it is the 24th most-deprived local authority in England, has the third-highest level of child poverty in the country at 36%, and one of the biggest gaps between the wealthiest and poorest residents.

Islington Council launched Angelic Energy in October 2017. It is a white-label provider, set up in partnership with energy supply company Robin Hood Energy Ltd. For more information, see http://islington.media/r/45015/angelic_energy__islington_council_launches_new__fairer.
