Apprentices to get more out of recycling!
Islington Council is giving 10 young residents a fresh start through a new recycling apprenticeship scheme aimed at driving up recycling rates.
The new starters will spend a year with the recycling team, learning about how to reduce waste and encouraging residents to recycle more.
As well as becoming recycling champions for Islington, they will each gain transferable professional and life skills, two City & Guilds qualifications and a solid grounding in the workings of the waste industry.
Cllr Claudia Webbe, executive member for environment and transport, said: "As well as us opening the door for these young people into the world of work, working alongside experienced staff, the apprentices will help residents take a closer look at how much they can recycle.
"There are two big benefits of recycling - it is better for the environment and it saves the council money."
A key part of the apprentices' role will be as recycling champions, visiting residents to talk to them about how to recycle as much as possible and waste less.
Crucially, they will also work to find out what challenges residents face in recycling even more, so the council can help to improve recycling services further.
The apprenticeship scheme is also part of a wider council drive to help residents back into work.
