Attack at Manchester synagogue – Leader’s statement

The Leader of Islington Council has condemned today’s (Thursday, 2 October) attack outside the Heaton Park Synagogue in Manchester.

In a statement, Cllr Una O’Halloran, Leader of Islington Council, said: “We are horrified and deeply saddened by the appalling attack outside Heaton Park Synagogue in Manchester.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected, especially the family and friends of those that have tragically lost their lives.

“This attack took place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, outside a sacred space. Put simply, it is an attack on the values of peace, tolerance, and community that we all hold dear.

“This sort of violence and hatred can never be justified, and we utterly condemn this despicable act.

“We know that many people in our borough will be feeling anxious and distressed. Islington has always been, and will always be, a place where people of all faiths and backgrounds are welcome and safe.

“We are working closely with partners to ensure that Islington’s Jewish community feels supported and protected during this extremely challenging time.

“At a time when hateful, extreme views and ideologies are on the rise, we reaffirm our commitment to standing against division and intolerance. Islington is proud to be a Borough of Sanctuary where everyone, no matter their background, is welcome.”
