Attack on Thistle Hotel - Leader and local MP's statement

The Leader of Islington Council and Emily Thornberry MP have condemned a "despicable" attack at the Thistle Hotel in the Barbican, the temporary home of a number of asylum seekers.

The Metropolitan Police are investigating the incident at the site on Dingley Road, Islington, which took place at around 10.53pm on Wednesday, 24 September.

No-one was injured in the incident, and a fire at the site had been put out before police attended. The police are currently treating the incident as a hate crime.

In a joint statement issued today (Friday, 26 September), Cllr Una O'Halloran, Leader of Islington Council, and Emily Thornberry, MP for Islington South and Finsbury, said: "We utterly condemn this despicable and cowardly attack that has no place in our community or society.

“Islington is a proud beacon of tolerance and diversity that welcomes people from all over the world. Anyone who seeks to divide us will fail. This kind of violence can never be the answer.

“While we are relieved that nobody was hurt in this incident, we are aware that it could have been even more serious. Islington is proud to be a borough of sanctuary and will always provide support for those fleeing war or persecution. Anyone who seeks to incite hatred or violence has no place in Islington.

“We know many people in Islington will be rightly very concerned about this hate crime, and there will be extra reassurance patrols of council and police officers locally in the coming days, alongside extra support for residents of the hotel.

"Islington has always been, and will always be, a place where everyone - regardless of their background or journey - feels safe, supported, and welcome."

Anyone with any information that could help the police in their investigation is asked to contact 101, quoting the CAD reference 8549/24SEP.
