Bulky Waste Collection
(begins)
Charges for bulky waste collections
An Islington Council spokesman said: “Islington has introduced a charge for bulky waste collections from street properties, because of the need to make savings in response to ongoing Government cuts.
“This will bring street properties into line with properties on estates, which already pay for bulky waste collections through their service charges.
“Most other London boroughs already charge for collecting bulky waste and the cost in Islington will be in line with the London average.
“Residents can still take their bulky waste to be disposed of at the Household Reuse and Recycling Centre for free.”
NOTES:
Bulky waste collections are for domestic waste that is too big for the bin and not suitable for reuse eg soiled carpets, broken fridges.
The council will collect up to three items from a street property in one collection for £30. Additional items can be booked for £10 each; up to 10 items can be collected in one visit.
Half-price collections are available for people who receive housing benefit or council tax support.
Most London boroughs (25) charge for the collection of bulky waste, with an average charge for the collection of three items of around £30.
Evidence from other London boroughs suggests that there is no link between restricting or charging for bulky waste collections and the levels of fly-tipping.
The council will continue to take action against fly-tippers.
