Cllr Satnam Gill appointed as new executive member for Finance and Performance
At the start of next month, Cllr Satnam Gill will become the new Executive Member for Finance and Performance at Islington Council, looking to implement the ambitious measures proposed in this year’s Budget.
The appointment comes after Cllr Andy Hull announced he will be stepping down from the position on Friday 28 February to take up a new role as Chief Executive of EachOther, a human rights charity based in Islington.
Cllr Gill was first elected as a councillor for St George’s ward in 2014 and recently retired as principal of the Working Men’s College, an adult further education college in Camden. He has previously worked as a resources director and vice principal of a sixth form college. He has a long record of involvement in anti-racism and anti-cuts campaigning.
He will take up the role on an interim basis initially, with a permanent appointment to be noted at May Full Council.
Over the past six years, Cllr Hull has worked tirelessly to help make Islington a fairer place. Ever since his election as a councillor in 2010, he has driven forward important causes such as the real Living Wage and the Charter Against Modern Slavery. The Council has since adopted both, becoming the first ever accredited Living Wage local authority in the country. Cllr Hull played a key role in the 2010 Fairness Commission and since becoming Executive Member for Finance, Performance and Community Safety in 2013, he has driven forward the Budget process, engaging with councillors and stakeholders, to make Islington a fairer place.
He will continue to serve as a backbench councillor for the Highbury West ward.
Speaking on his appointment Cllr Gill said “I am delighted to take up this new role at an exciting time for the Council. This year’s Budget aims to invest in the things that matter most to Islington residents and seeks to make the borough a fairer place for all.
“I want to thank Andy immensely for all of his work over the last six years on the Executive. He has led by example and we are sad to see him go. I am excited to carry on his vital work.”
The appointment was made by the Leader of the Council, Cllr Richard Watts, and Cllr Gill will take up his new role on 2nd March.
