Cool spaces offer vital relief as summer heat intensifies
With temperatures soaring and more heatwaves expected, cool community spaces across Islington are providing a lifeline for residents struggling with the heat.
This summer has already seen three major heatwaves in London, with temperatures reaching nearly 36°C – and more extreme weather is expected as climate change continues to intensify. Temperatures are projected to rise again this week. In response, Islington’s network of cool spaces is helping residents stay safe, well, and connected.
Located in community centres and public buildings across the borough, these spaces offer a calm, welcoming environment for anyone needing a break from the heat. They are especially important for people living in high-rise flats, those with health conditions, and families with young children.
The idea for cool spaces came from Islington’s Climate Panel – a group of residents who developed community resilience proposals to help the borough adapt to extreme weather. The council is now collaborating with local businesses and community groups to bring these ideas to life.
On a visit to Vibast Community Centre in Old Street, a designated cool space, Cllr Dr Sara Hyde, Executive Member for Health and Social Care, said that: “Having these cool spaces is really important.
“Many people in Islington live in flats built in a different era that weren’t designed for extreme heat, where it’s hard to get a breeze through, and the heat can be unbearable – especially for older people, those with health conditions, or families with babies.
“These spaces offer not just physical relief, but also a sense of community and calm.”
One regular user of the Vibast Community Centre, Sevin, described how, due to her needing a walker, getting around her maisonette can be very difficult. She said: “My flat gets very, very hot – it’s south-east facing and I have high blood pressure. But I can come here and I’m happy. They make me tea, bring me a biscuit, and it’s cool and friendly. It’s my happy place.”
Another regular user of the cool space, Helen, added: “I run a stay and play here on Mondays. Parents, nannies, and childminders know they can come here when it’s too hot – they can feed their children, use the facilities, or just sit somewhere cool and quiet.”
