Council launches three grant schemes targeting help at worst-hit businesses

Islington Council has launched three new grant schemes targeted at supporting businesses worst-hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.

One of the grant schemes will support hospitality, leisure and accommodation businesses most impacted by the Omicron variant, a second is targeted at helping businesses in town centres, and a third will give grants to small, independent businesses.

The Omicron Hospitality and Leisure Grant scheme is open now and will support certain types of business within the hospitality, leisure and accommodation sectors with one-off grants of up to £6,000.

Government has provided the grant funding in recognition of the impact the rise of the Omicron variant has had on these businesses, and Islington Council is administering the scheme.

The Town Centre Grant and the Omicron Additional Restriction Grant have just opened for applications.

Cllr Asima Shaikh, Executive Member for Inclusive Economy and Jobs, said: “I’m really pleased that we are able to offer these grants to help local businesses affected by the Omicron variant.

“The run-up to Christmas and the New Year is usually the busiest time in our town centres and for businesses in hospitality, leisure and accommodation, but they were dealt a devastating blow and many experienced reduced trade and cancellations due to fears over the spread of the Omicron variant.

“This crisis has been unprecedented and we remain committed to supporting local businesses, protecting jobs and our local economy. I believe that by working together, Islington will come through this. I encourage all eligible businesses to make an application.”

The application processes are very similar to previous grant schemes administered by the council. Businesses will need to apply for one of the grants using an online form and provide some key information about their business.

Applications for the Omicron Hospitality and Leisure Grant close on Friday, 11 March, while the other two schemes will run until all the funds have been allocated.  These two schemes are expected to be competitive, and businesses are advised to apply as soon as possible.
