Council Leader reflects on "rewarding and enriching" first year in post
To mark the one-year anniversary of the beginning of her leadership of Islington Council, Cllr Una O'Halloran has issued the following statement, expressing her pride and looking ahead to the future.
Today marks one year since I became Leader of Islington Council, and it has been the most rewarding and enriching year of my life. When I stepped into this role, I knew it would be challenging, but I also knew how much potential we have as a borough when we work together.
We know that for the residents we serve, housing is a daily issue. Whether that is trying to get onto the housing ladder, securing social housing, or making sure you have a safe and secure place to live, the housing crisis has had a massive impact on our lives.
That is why, as the first council tenant to become Leader of the Council, it has been at the forefront of my mind too. Our buyback scheme will provide much-needed social housing to hundreds of families in Islington, and our Landlord Licensing scheme will ensure that tenants in privately rented homes will have safe, high-quality homes with landlords held accountable for maintaining their properties.
We continue to celebrate what is great about our borough, whether that is our vibrant markets and independent shops, our beautiful green spaces, or our rich cultural heritage. Islington has been my home all my life, and I never cease to be amazed at how we excel as a borough.
Speaking of excellence, seeing Islington come together to celebrate Arsenal Women FC winning the Champions League was a highlight of my year, and I look forward to celebrating many more of their accomplishments
But beyond the headlines, it’s the people who make this job special. I have loved meeting residents at community events, listening to your ideas and hearing your stories. Those conversations have shaped everything I have done as Leader. Leadership isn’t about sitting behind a desk, it’s about being out in our communities, working side by side with the residents we serve.
I know that the past year has been difficult for many of us. The cost-of-living crisis is still affecting us, and the ugly spectre of racism and prejudice has appeared again in our borough. Islington is a proud Borough of Sanctuary, and we reject those who aim to spread hate and division in our communities. Islington is for all, regardless of faith or background, and I will fight for tolerance and acceptance every single day that I lead our council.
It has been an honour to lead Islington Council for the past year, and I am so excited to celebrate the great achievements over the year ahead with you all.
