Council Tax Support Scheme continues for those most in need

Thousands of low-income households will see their council tax significantly reduced – and in some cases removed entirely – as Islington Council continues to support those most in need.

As part of its mission to create a more equal future, the council offers one of the most generous Council Tax Support Schemes in the country, with more than 24,500 households across the borough set to benefit from its continuation in 2026/27.

For the most financially vulnerable residents, the scheme provides 100% support, meaning they pay no council tax at all.

Other working-age claimants will continue to have up to 95% of their council tax covered, while pensioners claiming the support remain protected under national rules.

At a time when household budgets are being stretched to the limit, Islington Council spent approximately £28 million protecting those most in need through the scheme in 2025/26, and will commit a similar figure in 2026/27 – showcasing once again how the council is creating real, tangible change for the benefit of local people.

The Council Tax Support Scheme is just one example of Islington’s support for low-income households, with the council’s Income Maximisation Service helping to secure £16.2 million additional income for those in need since April 2024.

Cllr Flora Williamson, Islington Council’s Executive Member for Finance and Performance, said: “We know that many of our residents are struggling, amid the huge rise in the cost of living over recent years.

“Here in Islington, we stand with those that most need support, and make sure that low-income households aren’t left behind. That’s why we’re again committing to continuing our generous Council Tax Support Scheme at one of the highest levels in the country.

“It’s just one example of how we’re taking action to improve the lives of our residents and to make our borough a more equal place.”

The Council Tax Support Scheme is reviewed and approved annually by law. While many other councils have reduced the support, Islington has consistently chosen to maintain it at a high level.

It ensures that vulnerable residents are not disproportionately impacted by council tax. For further information on the scheme, and the qualification criteria, head to the council’s website.
