Councillor Kaya Comer-Schwartz, Leader of Islington Council, responds to the Spring Budget

"I am relieved to see our lobbying, alongside other councils and charities, has been recognised by the Chancellor in the Spring Budget through his U-Turn on plans to scrap the Household Support Fund.

"For our residents, this means we can continue our vital work to ensure children don’t go hungry over school holidays and to support low-income carers, pensioners, and care leavers.

"However, it is extremely disappointing that we had to wait until the last minute for the extension and that it is only for six months. This is part of a troubling pattern of short-term funding and vision from the Government. Overall, the Spring Budget completely neglects to address the significant funding crisis confronting councils.

"Despite the continued lack of support and understanding from the Government, we will do everything we can to maintain our excellent public services. We delivered a balanced budget on 29 February to ensure we meet our ambitions, as set out in our Islington Together 2030 plan.”
