Helping you to make the most of summer and beyond
Islington Council Leader Kaya Comer-Schwartz reveals there's still plenty left to keep families, children and young people happy, healthy and safe this summer - and offers pointers to exam results support and an expanded free childcare deadline.
While we’re just over halfway through the summer break, there’s still a long way to go before the children return to school, college, or head off for the first time – perhaps into their first job, apprenticeship or further education.
The good news is that whatever kind of summer you want – as a family, and for children and young people of all ages – you can do it in Islington. We’ve pulled out the stops to ensure it doesn’t break the bank, with hundreds of free or affordable things to do to make the most of the summer.
We’re delivering thousands of hours of free activities and courses for children, families and young people – many including a free lunch – helping to keep everyone healthy, happy and safe. And we’re celebrating our 127 parks and green spaces of all shapes and sizes that are great for play and sports, rest and relaxation, as well as 12 adventure playgrounds, three fantastic nature reserves, four swimming pools and seven leisure centres.
Islington’s united communities, vibrant high streets and buzzing cultural hubs are also bursting with free or affordable events and festivals, from theatre, music and dance to arts, crafts and food. For all the information about what’s on offer, head to islington.gov.uk/Summer and search #DoSummer on X (formerly Twitter).
Many families and young people will of course be waiting to see what the future holds for them when the exam results are released this week and next. We will be there to celebrate with you and to help students work out what their options are and the next steps that suit them best – whether that’s training or apprenticeships, further academic study or getting stuck into their first job.
Our dedicated Progress Team of advisors will be available on both results days by email and telephone, and right into the autumn and beyond – to help ensure every young person has the advice and guidance they need to continue their journey and make the most of their potential. You can email them at progress@islington.gov.uk or call 020 7527 7031.
Naturally, this can be a stressful time and if your child is worried about results day, there is helpful advice available on Kooth.com, while there are signposts to lots of other support on our website.
A final urgent reminder, too, for working families with a child at least 9 months old by 31 August: if you want to take up a childcare place from September, please check your eligibility for a code for 15 hours of free term-time care each week. You must apply before the end of this month for the autumn term. Find out what you’re eligible for and how to apply on the Government's website, or speak to the friendly Family Information Service on 020 7527 5959 or by emailing fis@islington.gov.uk.
