Election victory - letter to the Prime Minister

Following the General Election, a letter to the Prime Minister from Cllr Kaya Comer-Schwartz, the Leader of Islington Council

Dear Prime Minister,

Congratulations on your appointment as Prime Minister

I am writing to congratulate you on your historic election victory.

As Leader of Islington Council, I am acutely aware of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. I am confident that under your leadership we will see significant strides towards tackling inequality, improving public services, and creating opportunities for all.

We share your vision for a country where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, and we’re committed to collaborating with you to make this vision a reality, and to joining with your government of service in the mission of national renewal.

Some national policy changes would greatly help us to improve lives in our borough. Firstly, a cessation to budget reductions replaced by a multi-year financial settlement for local government that would help us bring stability to the services residents so badly need. Secondly, we want to establish a long-term and collaborative relationship with you, working together to bring our all our existing homes up to a decent standard, and for support in building new homes that would transform countless lives. Finally, devolving employment support to local authorities to put the control into the place where we can make the most difference and help thousands of people into work.

We look forward to working together with your government to address the issues that matter most to our residents. Your ministers are welcome to visit work in our borough – on housing, environment, employment and more – that show the real positive difference we can bring to people’s lives.

Yours sincerely,

Councillor Kaya Comer-Schwartz
Leader of Islington Council
