Finsbury Library to get a makeover and stay open longer

Finsbury Library is to close for five weeks from 21 September to 24 October for work that will improve facilities for the local community. During this time residents can use any other Islington library - the nearest library will be South Library at 115 Essex Road, N1.

The new-look library will be open for longer - with new shelving to accommodate all the existing books, CDs, and DVDs; improved seating, and more study space and power points so that it is even easier for local people to use the library.

The library will also continue to have free Wi-Fi and computer access, like all other Islington libraries.

After the works, Old Street Area Housing Office will move into the building at 245 St John St, EC1V. Islington Museum and Local History Centre are already based in the building.

Islington Council’s executive member for economic and community development, Cllr Asima Shaikh, said: “Finsbury Library is one of the borough’s biggest and best loved libraries and these improvement works will make it even easier for local people to come in and work.

“We know how important our libraries are to our residents, but essential works like these will help ensure they continue to play a central role in the community and stay relevant to people’s lives and needs. By providing a range of services in one building we hope it will be even easier for residents to use Council services in the future.

“We’d like to thank everyone affected by these works for their patience.”

Finsbury Library will continue to provide a range of services including e-books, audio books, on-line newspapers and magazines, as well as, CDs and DVDs. There is a great collection of books for adults and children - including picture books for young children - and Baby Bounce and Under 5s story-times take place every week.

From 26 October Finsbury Library’s new opening hours will be:

• 9am-8pm on Monday and Thursday; and
• 9am-5pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
