Flag flies at Islington Town Hall to help celebrate Living Wage Week

Islington Town Hall will fly the Living Wage flag this week to underline the council’s ongoing commitment to the Living Wage in Islington. It is also putting up Living Wage posters. 

 

Islington was the first council to become an accredited Living Wage employer and pays 100 per cent of its staff the London Living Wage or more.

 

It has also taken steps to ensure contractors are included, with 98 per cent of contracted staff now being paid at least the living wage too.

 

The council has helped encourage other local organisations to pay at least the living wage as well, and the borough has 110 accredited Living Wage employers, the second highest in London. 

 

It also became the first council to get Friendly Funder status, supporting Voluntary and Community Sector organisations (VCS) to pay the Living Wage through its core VCS Grants Programme.

 

Living Wage Week runs from Sunday 30th October to Saturday 5th November. 

 

Cllr Andy Hull, Executive member for Finance, Performance and Community Safety, said: “We firmly believe that no one should do a hard day’s work for less than they can live on. 

 

“Our continued support for local businesses and charities in paying the living wage reflects our ongoing commitment to fair pay in the borough. 

 

“The living wage has a positive impact on staff morale, recruitment and retention. We strongly encourage organisations across Islington to join us as Living Wage employers.”
