Gardeners gear up for Islington in Bloom 2015

The annual hunt is on for Islington’s best blooming gardens.

Islington Council’s Greenspace team has once again teamed up with Islington Gardeners to judge the best horticultural efforts of residents who have given up their time to make the borough a brighter place to live and work in.

Our residents make a huge difference to the way the borough looks and we are encouraging as many people as possible to get involved.

Green-fingered residents, schools, community groups and businesses the length and breadth of the borough are arming themselves with trimmers and shovels for a chance to be in the running for the coveted Islington in Bloom gongs for the best gardeners.

From residents who only have a window box to work their horticultural wizardry to whole streets getting their hands dirty to spruce up their neighbourhoods, the competition is open to all and sundry.

Prizes for best children’s planting, best blooming pub or business and best community garden are among the 11 categories available to enter.

Everyone who enters will get a free bag of compost, a half price plant and a £5 gift voucher courtesy of Camden Garden Centre. Prizes of up to £100 worth of garden centre vouchers are up for grabs in each Category.

And, for the first time, cultivators will be able enter their own gardens or nominate others online as well as by post.

Islington Council parks and open spaces manager Andrew Bedford said: “We are encouraging as many community groups and individuals to enter the Islington in Bloom competition as possible. We know that a lot of people will already have started work on their entries but there is still plenty of time to have a go.

“The competition is meant to make the borough a more colourful place by tapping into the skills of the people who live and work here.

"So if your window box, balcony or garden can be seen by passers-by, you can enter. Also school gardens, community centre gardens, which obviously aren’t always visible from the street are also eligible.”

Entries must be submitted before 29 May.
