Gardeners get growing for 'Islington in Bloom' 2018

Islington residents got their gardening gloves ready at the launch of ‘Islington in Bloom’ last weekend.

Plant plotting, nature trails and gardening advice sessions took place across Whittington Park, Paradise Park and Duncan Terrace Gardens on Saturday, marking the start of the competition to find Islington’s best gardens, balconies and window displays.

Organised by Islington Council and Islington Gardeners, Islington in Bloom is open to all residents and businesses and is a great opportunity to grow with friends and neighbours.

Every entrant will receive a free bag of compost from Camden Garden Centre and winners receive a £100 voucher to spend there. Second and third place will receive vouchers worth £75 and £50.

Judging will take place across a number of categories, including ‘Best Ward’, acknowledging the ward with a combination of the most and best quality entries.

Andrew Bedford, Head of Greenspace and Leisure at Islington Council said: “Islington in Bloom is always a highlight of the year and following last weekend’s launch, I’m sure this competition will be no exception. I look forward to seeing this year’s entries on display across the borough.

“I encourage all residents, businesses, schools and community groups to enter the competition – anyone with a box, balcony or garden that can be seen from the street is eligible.”

Entries are accepted until Sunday, 3 June and judging takes place from Monday, 18 June until Friday, 6 July. Entries can be made online or by picking up a form from any of Islington’s libraries and leisure centres, and the reception areas in the Town Hall and 222 Upper Street.
