Gardeners invited to put best buds forward for Islington In Bloom 2016
Green-fingered residents are preparing to dig for victory and have their blooming brilliant gardens battle it out for top prizes of £100 in this year’s Islington In Bloom competition.
The annual hunt is on for the prettiest pub display, greatest garden, best balcony and most creative container garden in the borough – and you can be part of it.
Islington residents and businesses are all being encouraged to enter the annual competition, which helps bring the borough’s streets and green areas to life in a riot of natural colour.
Even if you don’t have a window box, container garden or front garden at home you could plant up a tree pit on your street, estate or a forgotten corner in your community.
The winner in each of the 11 categories will scoop a £100 voucher to spend at Camden Garden Centre, the competition’s main sponsor. Prizes of £75 and £50 in vouchers are on offer for second and third-placed entries too.
On top of that, the garden centre will provide every entry with free compost, half-price plants and a £5 gift voucher.
And if you think others should get the recognition they deserve, you can nominate the best blooms you’ve spotted in Islington too, be it a great pub garden or a well-planted street.
Andrew Bedford, Islington Council’s parks and open spaces manager, said: “Islington in Bloom is an incredibly popular competition, and we know that a lot of people have already started work on their entries – but there is still plenty of time to get involved and create a green oasis yourself or with your neighbours.
“If your window box, balcony or garden can be seen from the street, you can enter, and school and community centre gardens are eligible too.”
The entry form this year is graced with a painting by William Tyndale primary school pupil Alice Appleton, winner of a competition run with local schools.
Entries are accepted until May 31, and judging takes place from mid-June into July. Entries can be made online or by picking up a form from any of Islington’s libraries and leisure centres, and the reception areas in the Town Hall and 222 Upper Street.
