Holly Park Estate Playground Improvement

£1m boost announced for estate improvements across Islington

More than 90 new estate improvements are set to benefit residents across Islington, as the next round of the council’s Thriving Neighbourhoods funding unlocks £1 million for safer, more vibrant, and welcoming communal spaces.

The latest funding round follows just over 250 improvement suggestions submitted by residents, staff and local councillors. The programme focuses on the improvements residents say matter most – including safer play spaces, better lighting, enhanced recycling hubs, accessible paths, and nature-filled outdoor areas close to home.

Thriving Neighbourhoods launched in 2022 as a £10 million investment to transform shared spaces on estates, ensuring that when development happens in Islington, everyone benefits. Since then, the council has delivered 265 improvements and counting, shaped by thousands of resident proposals over the past three years.

These latest projects will build on that success, continuing to prioritise communities with the greatest need – including children and young people, disabled residents, older people, and those who have historically been underserved. This final round of funding will mean all £10 million has been invested improving our estates.

Cllr Una O’Halloran, Leader of Islington Council, said:
“Thriving Neighbourhoods is all about fairness; making sure every community benefits from better, safer and more vibrant spaces. This latest £1m investment means more places for children to play, more welcoming parks and garden, and improvements that help residents feel proud of their estates. When people tell us what will make the biggest difference to their lives, we listen, and we Make It Happen.”

Residents have already shared powerful feedback on earlier improvements, describing better lighting, safer play areas, new cycle storage, and refreshed community centres as changes that make everyday life easier, safer, and more sociable.
