Go go gadget workshop! Help for residents to get to grips with technology

Residents who struggle to keep up with new technologies have had the chance to get to grips with the latest gadgets and get online at a free workshop run by Islington Council. 

 

The north London local authority has been running a number of free ‘gadget workshops’ in which volunteers teach residents how to use tablets and smart phones, answer their questions, and give tips.  

 

The workshops have proved particularly popular with some older residents who want help to adjust to rapidly-changing digital technology. 

 

Islington Council is supporting residents to gain skills so they can access more of the benefits of going online. 

 

Going online makes it easier and more convenient to access council services and can make a real difference to residents’ quality of life – whether through staying in touch with friends and family, finding work, or getting better deals on services such as gas and electricity, banking and insurance. 

 

Islington Council’s executive member for finance, performance, and community safety, Cllr Andy Hull, said: “We know that efforts to tackle social isolation can help boost people’s wellbeing and even help them to live longer.”

 

“New digital technology can help here – it has the power to connect people to friends and family and local services too.” 

 

“The pace of technological change is astonishing and it’s critical that none of our communities – including older people – are left behind.”

 

“These workshops are a great way for local people to make new technologies work for them and to discover new worlds, connections and opportunities online.”

The workshops are just one example of how Islington Council is helping residents to build skills and get online. They are part of the Islington-wide digital inclusion programme – Go ON Islington – in which the council is working together with local businesses and voluntary organisations to support those residents who are at risk of missing out.
