Go Islington heads back to Highbury Fields

Highbury Fields is set to host a day packed full of sporty fun and activities this month as Go Islington returns to energise the borough.

This year it will be held on Saturday, July 23 and offer a wide range of free sports and games to take part in, as well as demonstrations and many other activities.

Go Islington is hugely popular and has been held almost every summer since the 2012 London Olympics. Thousands of people have attended in previous years to join in the fun, try something new and get into sport.

This year some of the highlights include the chance to try out sports including handball, basketball, cycling, boccia, climbing, tennis and mixed martial arts.

There will also be an urban country show with a global food market, duck herding, a BMX stunt show, tree-climbing demos and a top dog competition, alongside demonstrations of tai chi and a chance to see birds of prey in the flesh.

There will be healthy food stalls, zumba classes, and lots of activities for younger children including baby ballet, salsa and singalong in the marquee.

Free bicycle repairs are on offer too, and there is the chance to find out more about getting active in Islington, sport for women, girls and disabled people, and how to get more involved in improving your local park.

John Thorne, Islington’s leisure and physical activity manager, said: “Go Islington is always a fantastic event and a really popular family day out.

"With a huge breadth of sports to try out and demonstrations to take in, you are bound to discover something new and exciting – so head down on July 23 for a day to remember.”

The event is the highlight of the council’s Love Islington Parks summer campaign, raising awareness of the borough’s 120 parks and small spaces, all vital green havens for residents.

By the end of the summer more than 50 events and activities will have taken place as part of Love Islington Parks, which was launched with the reopening of the refurbished Biddestone Park in Holloway.
