GPS technology to give residents cleaner streets

Islington Council is launching a new phone app today to help residents and visitors report sightings of rubbish which will be promptly cleared by a street cleaning task force.

The hi-tech innovation makes light work of reporting dog fouling, overflowing bins, graffiti, and fly-tips online using the mobile service which is available for free for iPhone, Android and Windows Phone via app stores.

The 'Clean Islington app' uses GPS technology and a photograph to give the precise location of the eyesore plus a visual record.  The problem is then sent to the council's street environment services team for action.

When it has been cleared away, the app is updated with photographic confirmation.

Cllr Claudia Webbe, Islington Council's executive member for environment and transport said:

"We want to encourage residents and visitors to report rubbish in our streets so we can clear it promptly.

"In line with residents' priorities, we are innovating to meet their expectations, tackling problems that cause an environmental eyesore and in doing so, making our town centres and neighbourhoods more pleasant places to live, work and enjoy.

"We spend millions of pounds every year keeping our borough tidy - now our new mobile phone app using the latest GPS technology makes it easier and quicker for residents to report a problem and get it fixed."

Announced during March's Spring Clean - which sees a council blitz on grot and grime in Nag's Head, Finsbury Park, Archway and Cally Road - the Clean Islington app can be used on mobiles for free.

The list of problems that can be reported on the app is expected to expand in the future.

Notes to editors

* The Clean Islington app is in addition to existing ‘Report an Environmental Problem’ for residents registered with My eAccount. * Every borough street is swept at least twice a week and the council empties approximately 1,000 litter bins and over 100 on-street recycling banks regularly. * Racist, abusive or sexist graffiti is prioritised for removal - within 24 hours of it being reported.
