Greener homes – new guidance for increasing energy-efficiency and reducing emissions

New guidance from Islington Council will help people to improve the impact of their homes and buildings on the planet, cut energy bills, and adapt to climate change.

The council has adopted a new Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) and published a Retrofit Handbook. This new guidance simplifies the planning process for local people, businesses and landlords who wish to make changes to their properties to benefit the environment. For example, many residents may not be aware that they do not need planning permission to upgrade their windows to keep their homes warmer, and in most cases, it is no longer necessary to provide a noise assessment for anyone installing an air source heat pump.

The Retrofit Handbook provides information on how to plan and deliver your own ‘retrofit journey’ - your project to make your home or premises more energy-efficient and less reliant on fossil fuels. It includes tips that can be helpful for everyone no matter your housing situation, including renters trying to keep their energy bills down, all the way up to homeowners undertaking a deep renovation of their property.

These documents have been shaped by engagement with a range of stakeholders, including local architects, businesses, housing associations, and resident groups.

Councillor Santiago Bell-Bradford, Executive Member for Inclusive Economy, Culture and Jobs: “Almost every home can use less energy and taking action to do that could reduce your bills this winter.

“Even small changes - like sealing draughts, using LED lightbulbs, or radiator foil - can make a big difference. Low-cost upgrades can help keep the heat in when it’s cold outside and save you money.

“These new documents will help residents understand their options and navigate the planning process more easily if they are looking to make larger changes.”

The council’s SHINE energy advice service is also available to support low-income households and those most vulnerable to fuel poverty.
