Have your say on transformative proposals for the Annette Road area

Greener, healthier and more welcoming streets are being proposed in the Annette Road area, with a consultation on transformative plans launching today.

As part of its efforts to create greener, healthier streets for all, Islington Council has been speaking with local people in the area about the changes that they’d like to see.

So far, the council has heard how local people, businesses, and schools are looking for a range of improvements, including improved pavements, greener streets with more planting, safer cycle routes, better air quality, more child-friendly streets, and improved safety.

Having taken on board this feedback, the council is proposing the creation of the borough’s third “liveable neighbourhood” in the area. Liveable neighbourhoods combine a range of measures to create more pleasant streets for communities to come together, to support local businesses, to create safer spaces where children can play, and are more environmentally friendly.

The proposals that the council is consulting on include:

  • A new zebra crossing on Hornsey Road, improving walking and wheeling access to the Harvist Estate.
  • A new green and welcoming space at the junction of Jackson Road and Hornsey Road.
  • Changes to lighting to improve feelings of safety at night along Annette Road.
  • Improvements and upgrades to the existing planted areas on Annette Road.
  • Improvements to the Annette Road Orchard to create a child-friendly community space.
  • Traffic filtering to create quieter, safer, and healthier streets.
  • New street trees and planting to make the neighbourhood greener.
  • Improvements to side-road crossings on Hornsey Road.

Cllr Rowena Champion, Islington Council’s Executive Member for Environment, Air Quality, and Transport, said: “We’re committed to creating a greener, healthier Islington, and the Annette Road area has a real opportunity to become a safer, more welcoming space for everyone.

“These proposals reflect what local people have told us they want – cleaner air, more greenery, and streets where communities can thrive.

“So far, feedback from local people has helped shape our proposals, and we look forward to hearing your views in our public consultation. “

Further details on the proposals are available on the council’s Let’s Talk Islington webpage, where there’s also information on online and in-person consultation events.

Taking into account the feedback from consultation a decision will be made whether to proceed. Should it go ahead, Annette Road would be the council’s third liveable neighbourhood scheme, after plans for schemes in Mildmay and the Cally were agreed last year.
