Help stop coronavirus – become a Covid-19 Health Champion in Islington

Islington residents can take action to help stop coronavirus by becoming a Covid-19 Health Champion.

Covid-19 Health Champions help to share health messages and guidance in their community, and keep an eye out for people who might need help or support.

The champions scheme builds on the excellent support that many people in Islington have already been giving to their communities during this very challenging year.

Free training and support is provided, and champions are given the latest and most up-to-date information to share, for example about NHS Test and Trace and social distancing.

Champions will also learn how to recognise when someone may need health and wellbeing support, and how to put them in touch with services that can help them.

Anyone aged over 18 who works or volunteers in Islington can become a Covid-19 Champion, and can choose how little or how much they want to be involved.  You can find out more on the council website at islington.gov.uk/covidchampions

Cllr Sue Lukes, Islington Council’s executive member for community safety, has signed up to become an Islington Covid-19 champion.

She said: “Our top priority is keeping our residents safe and supported throughout the pandemic.

“People in Islington have been brilliant at looking out for each other and their communities during the pandemic.  This training and the champion role offers extra help and guidance for what many people are already doing.

“Covid-19 Health Champions can play a really useful part in our community by helping to share up-to-date, reliable guidance, and looking out for people who might need help or support.

“We invite anyone interested in becoming a Covid-19 Health Champion to get in touch – there is no obligation and you can do as little or as much as you want.”

Notes to editors

Simple steps to keep the virus under control and protect ourselves, our friends and our families:

  • Wash your hands regularly  and make the most of hand sanitiser stations at buildings and public spaces
  • Wear a face covering in public places, including in shops, while not seated in bars and restaurants and, on public transport
  • Create space – stay 2m apart from people outside your household, particularly in public places
  • Stick with six – do not meet in groups of more than six people at any time, indoors or outdoors, and try to limit the number of people you see socially over a short period

Check your symptoms – if you start to develop any coronavirus symptoms – a high temperature, a new, continuous cough, or a loss or change to your taste or smell – make sure you self-isolate and book a test. To make it easier for residents to get a test, there is now a testing centre in the Sobell Leisure Centre car park which can be booked through the app or by calling 119.

If you've got symptoms, you must stay at home for 10 days, and anyone in your household must stay at home for 14 days.
