Help the environment and recycle your Christmas tree

Islington residents are being asked to make this a green Christmas and recycle their Christmas tree.

The council has set up a range of options to make it easier to recycle trees, wherever residents live in the borough.

Four sites have been set up in Islington parks to receive residents' Christmas trees between 2 January and 17 January:

• Barnard Park, N1
• Elthorne Park, N19
• King Square, EC1
• Rosemary Gardens, N1

Estate residents will also be able to recycle trees near them and can contact caretakers for details of local collection points.

Residents who live in street properties can leave their Christmas tree at the edge of their property, along with their regular green waste, on their normal collection day to be picked up.

Dedicated crews will collect door-to-door between 4 and 15 January with normal recycling crews collecting after these dates.

Residents are being urged to be responsible and not dump trees on pavements or roads.

Cllr Claudia Webbe,  executive member for environment and transport, said: "Following the festive season we want to help residents easily and safely dispose of their Christmas tree, helping also to add to much-needed compost for our borough's parks.

"That’s why we’re once again running the Christmas tree recycling scheme. By recycling their tree, residents can save the council money, do good for the environment and help keep our parks looking fresh in 2016."

Trees should be stripped of all decorations and, if using park disposal sites, left in the signposted and enclosed tree collection areas.

Alternatively, the Household Reuse and Recycling Centre in Hornsey Street, N7, accepts green waste such as Christmas trees all year round.

Trees put out for recycling after the Christmas tree period will be collected by refuse/recycling crews on normal collection days.
