Islington Assembly Hall launches free hire scheme for community groups

Community groups are being offered the chance to use one of the borough’s finest events spaces free of charge, as Islington Assembly Hall launches its free hire scheme.

Run in collaboration with Islington Council’s arts team, Islington Assembly Hall is offering local community organisations the chance to win hire of the prestigious grade-II listed venue to hold an event.

Last year several organisations won a free hire slot and held various events. These included the Islington Veterans Association, who held a lunch and performances celebrating the 70th anniversary of VE Day, and Sport Islington celebrating local young sports stars.

Islington Foster Carers Association threw a Christmas party for children and young people in care, and the Cubitt Spring Ball, a contemporary tea dance for the over-55s.

Cllr Asima Shaikh, executive member for economic and community development, said: “We want to support the organisations working tirelessly, in many different ways, to improve and enrich lives right across our borough.

“The free hire scheme has proved popular among local organisations, which often operate on small budgets or in the face of great financial pressure, and I am pleased that we are able to run it again this year.

"It is a small token of our gratitude and I would invite groups to apply.”
Following feedback from previous applicants, this year’s scheme will be split in two with the first round of applications for events to be held between July and September 2016. This round is open now, with a deadline of 29 February.

The second round of applications will open in May for events in the hall between January and March 2017.

Up to four organisations in each round will be offered the hire of Islington Assembly Hall for their event on available dates.

Successful applications must demonstrate a commitment to provide an event or activity with a borough-wide impact that focuses on at least one of the following four areas: community cohesion; children and young people; diversity; and creative ways of engaging local residents.
