Islington Council celebrates new generation of repair trainees

Five young people from Islington are ready to take their career to the next level after successfully completing their traineeships with Islington Council’s Housing Repairs Team.

The trainees, aged 16 to 23, spent 13 weeks working with skilled operatives in the Repairs Team and learning their trade in the council’s new training centre in Station Road, N19.

During their time at the centre they learned hands-on skills including painting, decorating, and carpentry, as well as construction skills and how to write their CV and apply for jobs.

They were referred to the programme through the borough’s Youth Employment Team, as well as a number of youth clubs across Islington.

The trainees received their certificates of completion at an awards ceremony, along with a number of local women who completed a series of free DIY skills sessions run by Islington Council earlier this year.

Islington Council Leader, Cllr Richard Watts, said: “Islington Council is committed to helping local residents to find work they want and establish new careers. We owe it to our young people especially to give them the support they need to get the jobs they deserve and achieve their ambitions.

“Congratulations to all those trainees who successfully completed their training. These traineeships are a fantastic opportunity for local young people who want to develop valuable skills and get first-hand experience of the world of work.”

“Well done too to all those women who took part in our free DIY taster sessions – another great example of what we can do together as a borough to support local unemployed people who want to access high quality training and education.”

The DIY taster sessions were run in partnership with the TCL Group and Wates, which contributed the tools and materials, and Islington Adult Community Learning.

All five trainees have since applied to undertake an apprenticeship with the north London local authority, If successful, these will begin in September.

About traineeships
Traineeships are a government-funded initiative to help young people gain experience and skills to increase their prospects of finding work. They involve a mixture of training in college and work experience with an employer – in this case Islington Repairs Team. They are short-term programmes and are popular because the work placement element enables the young person to understand and experience the work environment in preparation for applying for apprenticeships.
