Islington Council to hold beacon lighting event for The Queen’s 90th birthday
Final preparations are being made for a special event in Islington celebrating Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday, with the lighting of a Birthday Beacon in Dartmouth Park.
The free family event will see a specially-constructed beacon lit by the Mayor of Islington, the first citizen of the borough, in celebration of the Queen’s lifetime of service to the UK.
The beacon will be one of hundreds lit simultaneously across the country at 8.30pm on Thursday, April 21.
Islington Council is inviting local schoolchildren and people of all ages to join the Mayor at the event, which will start at 7.30pm with a handheld torch-making workshop for children.
The Mayor will then lead a short ceremony, reading a message from His Royal Highness The Prince Of Wales before lighting the beacon at 8.30pm. A bagpiper will then play the national anthem.
Dartmouth Park was chosen as the most appropriate site as it is the highest park in the borough.
The Mayor, Cllr Richard Greening, said: “Everyone is welcome to join me and take part in this symbolic lighting, a gesture which will be mirrored at sites across the UK and the Commonwealth in an age-old tradition.”
Entrance to the event is free and will be by the northern gate in Bickerton Road.
