Islington flies flag for Transgender Day of Remembrance

 

TDOR is an annual event to remember those who have lost their lives as a result of anti-transgender violence. 

 

It aims to raise public awareness of hate crime against transgender people, and commemorate the victims of anti-transgender violence.                  

     

Cllr Osh Gantly, the only trans elected representative in London and one of only a few in the country, said: “It is right that our council marks International Transgender Day of Remembrance by flying the transgender flag over Islington Town Hall.

 

“Transgender Day of Remembrance is a time to reflect on and draw attention to the continued transphobic violence endured by the transgender community in the last year and the years before. By flying the flag we remember the victims of such violence, many of whom are no longer with us as a result of the abuse they have suffered. 

 

"I am very proud to be an Islington Councillor who happens to identify as trans, and I am grateful to Cllr Richard Watts for his commitment to the cause of trans people.”

 

Leader of the council, Cllr Richard Watts, said: “I am pleased that we can support Transgender Day of Remembrance, and raise awareness of the violent crimes that are carried out against trans people. We are committed to equality for all Islington residents.”
