Islington’s Eleanor Schooling appointed as new Ofsted director
Eleanor Schooling, Islington’s Corporate Director for Children’s Services and a long-serving public sector worker, is set to join Ofsted as National Director - Social Care from September.
Ms Schooling, who has been Islington’s Director of Children’s Services since March 2009, is being seconded to Ofsted for four months prior to her retirement from Islington at Christmas.
As Chair of the Association of Directors of Children’s Services’ standards, performance and inspection policy committee, Eleanor has worked closely with Ofsted for some time. She joins them to provide leadership while they recruit a new, permanent director.
Islington Council leader, Cllr Richard Watts, said:
“I can think of no-one better than Eleanor for this role – she will provide Ofsted with drive and clarity, as she has done for many years at Islington.
“We will all miss her very much – she has played an essential and integral role in transforming children’s services in the borough over the past decade, during which time I had the pleasure of working very closely with her on matters including improving school attainment.
“Today Islington’s GCSE results are better than the national average, and we are one of only six local authorities in England where all secondary schools are rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding; these are impressive achievements and Eleanor should take her share of the credit.”
Eleanor joined Islington Council in 2009 from Cambridge Education @ Islington, the then-provider of Islington’s education services. She has worked with children and young people in London for over 35 years as a senior officer in several local authorities and a head teacher at a number of primary schools.
Eleanor Schooling said:
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Islington, this has been a wonderful job surrounded by brilliant people.
“I want inspection to be good for children and I look forward to working with Ofsted on that aspect of the role.”
Islington Council will now begin recruitment for a new Director of Children’s Services.
