Mayor congratulates Islington students receiving their A Level, vocational and technical course results

The Mayor of Islington and Leader of the Council are due to congratulate students at Central Foundation Boys’ School near Old Street this morning, while expert advisors are gearing up to provide personalised advice and specialised support for any student considering their options.

The Mayor of Islington, Cllr Rosaline Ogunro, said: “I’m really looking forward to feeling the buzz of excitement and meeting the students this morning to reflect with them on their achievements and the challenges they overcame.

“Today is an important milestone for hundreds of our young people after lots of hard work, and now is the time to think about the bright futures that lay ahead. Congratulations to every student who received their results today!”

Leader of the Council, Cllr Una O’Halloran, added: “I’m always impressed by the dedication and ambition of our students and celebrating with them is one of the highlights of my year. Yet again, I’m very proud that our community has supported them to achieve their personal best – from the teachers and support staff in our family of schools to parents and care-givers, our libraries and beyond.

“The world is full of possibilities, and we’ve ensured that the best advice about their next steps is available right here in Islington. As well as a special Opportunities Fair next month, our Progress Team of careers advisors are on hand right now for anyone who’d like to find out what their options are, including job opportunities, further training, apprenticeships and more.”

Students can receive personalised support from the council's Progress Team of specialist advisors. As well as being at some schools today, they are also available by phone on 020 7527 7031 and by email at progress@islington.gov.uk at any time.

The team is also available in-person every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the summer at the council’s offices at 222 Upper Street, N1 1XR, between 10am and 4pm. Additional drop-in sessions are being run at the same venue and the same times every day between Monday 24 August and Friday 28 August. The team is also running drop-in sessions at West Library, 107 Bridgeman Rd, N1 1BD, from 10am to 4pm on Tuesday 24 August and Thursday 27 August.

On top of that, young people can explore new opportunities themselves at two special events at West Library, as part of September’s Careers Week. Both are free and no appointment is needed – just drop in.

Youth Employment Day takes place on 22 September, running from 11am to 2pm and aimed at young people aged 16 and up. In the morning, an information and insight session will offer support with CVs and cover letters, job applications, using LinkedIn, and digital job searches (11am-12pm). After that, an Opportunities and Careers Fair (12pm-2pm) will give young people the chance to meet training providers and teams from Islington Council, one of the borough’s major employers.

Meanwhile, on 24 September, an Opportunities Fair will bring together council services, employers, colleges, adult learning and training providers. Together they will showcase dozens of opportunities, inspire ambition and help young people take their next step into education, training or employment.

The event, for those aged 18 and up, starts with an information and insight session. This includes a CV masterclass, help with job applications and interview skills, using LinkedIn and digital job searches (11am-12pm). Then from 12pm-2pm, young people will be able to put themselves directly in front of employers and providers who have live job vacancies.
