Leader statement: Coronavirus cases are rising in London, and we need action now

Cllr Richard Watts, leader of Islington Council, said: “It’s clear that coronavirus cases are rising significantly in London, and across the country.  As the virus spreads, all the evidence shows there will be more cases of serious ill health, hospitalisation and deaths.

“We strongly support stronger action in London now to help protect our friends, families and loved ones.  Along with the Mayor, other council leaders and public health experts we are today asking the Government to support our London plan to slow the spread of the virus, so we can avoid the need for another full lockdown.  We welcome the national measures, announced this afternoon, but more action is needed for our city.

“The Government needs urgently to fix London’s testing system.  Too many people are waiting too long to get tests, or are struggling to get them at all.  Islington needs its own testing centre – we have been calling for this for some time and have run into red tape and delay.  Because testing in London isn’t fully working, people don’t know if they have the virus and we don’t have a clear idea of how many cases there are.

“All the way through this pandemic, the people of Islington have looked out for each other and helped to keep us all safe.  We are here to help and give support as we all face this very difficult time together.  We know our residents will do the right thing for themselves and their loved ones to keep Islington safe.  We also need further action across London to protect us all.”
