Cllr Una O'Halloran, Leader of Islington Council

Let’s work together to recycle more and waste less

Council Leader Cllr Una O’Halloran shares why recycling is a key priority for the borough and highlights how investment and community action is helping to build a greener, healthier Islington.

There’s something powerful about what we can achieve when we come together as a community – and nowhere is that truer than in our efforts to reducing waste and in turn tackling the effects of climate change through local action.

Recycling is one of the everyday ways we can all make a difference and that’s why it’s a key priority for Islington Council. We’re working hard to make it easier than ever for everyone to do their bit.

Last month, we teamed up with the brilliant Islington Climate Centre to host a “Fun Day” for residents and families at the Jean Stokes Community Centre as part of the Cally Circular Food Programme, supported by ReLondon.

It was a joyful day full of community spirit, from smoothie-making with surplus fruit and veg, to toy repairs, crafting with recycled materials, and expert advice on sustainable living. Events such as these show how small actions can make a huge difference.

We’ve made great strides in recent years. We’re one of the few London boroughs to offer food waste recycling to blocks of flats – and soon, we’ll be rolling this service out to flats above shops too. We’re also investing £2 million to improve housing estates by upgrading their recycling facilities, and we’re asking residents to help shape those improvements.

We’re using new technology to better track what’s being recycled and reduce contamination – so more of what is collected by the council gets recycled. The more that we all understand about what goes where, the less that goes to waste!

But we can’t do it alone. We need your help to make Islington cleaner, greener, and healthier. Whether it’s using your food waste caddy, rinsing out containers before recycling, or helping a neighbour understand what goes where – every action matters.

So please, do your bit. Recycle it.

Follow us on Instagram and Facebook @IslingtonCouncil for fun tips and updates and sign up to our recycling newsletter at islington.gov.uk/recycling-and-rubbish to stay in the loop.

Together, we can build a borough that’s not only proud of its past – but leading the way to a greener future.
