London moves from lockdown into high Covid-19 alert level – leader’s statement

Cllr Richard Watts, leader of Islington Council, said: “From today (Wednesday, 2 December) London is moving into Tier 2 High Alert coronavirus restrictions. The relaxation of restrictions is welcome, allowing businesses and venues to operate in a Covid-secure way and giving us all the opportunity to enjoy more freedoms than during lockdown.

“However, it’s vital that we all keep doing everything we can to keep one another safe. Covid-19 remains a very real, very deadly virus that can affect any of us. Complacency now will only cost more lives and more disruption from this awful disease. Our actions over the coming weeks will be crucial in containing the spread of the virus and ensuring that we do not overwhelm our NHS. So, we must all continue to do our bit by following the rules throughout December.

“Keeping residents safe and supported during the pandemic remains our top priority. I know that these restrictions will be hard for many people in our borough, especially at this time of year. The council is here to help anyone who is struggling to cope. If you or someone you know needs support, please do not hesitate to call We Are Islington on 020 7527 8222 or minicom 020 7527 1900. Lines are open every day from 9am to 5pm. The council’s We Are Islington helpline, alongside Islington’s amazing mutual aid groups and volunteers, can help with everything from getting food and medicine, to a friendly chat.

“Throughout the pandemic, the council has repeatedly called for better access to testing in our borough. We welcome the opening of two walk-through testing centres in Islington – in the Sobell Leisure Centre car park and Finsbury Leisure Centre – which should make it easier for our residents to get tested. We will continue to monitor the situation and, if necessary, will lobby Government for further support to make it easier for local people to get tested.

“This also remains an incredibly tough time for Islington’s businesses, and we continue to do all we can to support those that are struggling. Full details of the latest financial guidance, information and support for local businesses can be found on the council’s website. Businesses who need advice can call the government’s Business Support Helpline on 0800 998 1098.

“The pandemic, and the incredible response of local people to it, has again highlighted the fantastic community spirit here in Islington. By continuing to stick together, we can get through this difficult time.”

Notes to editors

From Wednesday, 2 December, Islington will be in the Tier 2 of the Government’s coronavirus alert system. This means:

  • You must not socialise with anyone you do not live with or who is not in your support bubble in any indoor setting.
  • You must not socialise with a group of more than six people outside, including in a garden or public space.
  • Pubs and bars will remain closed, unless operating as restaurants.

As before, it is essential that you keep your distance from others where you can, wear a face covering in public places including on public transport and in shops, and wash your hands regularly and thoroughly.
