Major milestone as Islington launches its 10th School Street

Islington Council has launched its 10th School Street – the borough’s pioneering initiative to cut pollution, boost road safety and encourage cycling and walking.

Islington’s School Street Scheme reduces traffic outside schools at drop-off and pick-up, aiming to create quieter, safer, environments for children, with cleaner air.

On Monday (June 3) Hugh Myddelton Primary School in Clerkenwell and Winton Primary School near King’s Cross became the 9th and 10th schools in Islington to launch School Streets, a major milestone for the scheme.  Islington’s first school street opened in November last year.

In a consultation, 68% of responses supported the proposal for Hugh Myddelton and 84% of responses supported the proposal for Winton School. Both will initially run as 18-month trials.

Claire Brown, Head of School at Winton Primary School, said: “We are delighted to be the borough’s 10th school with a school street – Winton’s children will now be safer walking to school and this will support them in developing healthy habits by deciding to walk to school.”

Cllr Claudia Webbe, Islington council’s executive member for environment and transport, said: “Islington’s School Streets cut traffic outside schools, reducing pollution, improving road safety and making it much easier for children to walk, bike or scoot to school.

“It’s fantastic that today we can celebrate two more school streets for Islington, which have had strong backing from parents and carers.  Children are especially vulnerable to air pollution and we’re determined to take action to bring a better environment at the school gates.

“This is Islington’s 10th School Street in little more than six months, and we’re committed to more school street schemes and similar measures to cut traffic outside our schools.”

Under the Hugh Myddelton Primary School scheme Garnault Place, Myddelton Street, Gloucester Way, Whiskin Street and Meredith Street will be closed between 8.20am - 9.15am and 3.00pm – 3.45pm in term time only.

Under the Winton Primary School scheme, Killick Street, between Southern Street and Collier Street, and Collier Street, between Killick Street and Calshot Street, will be closed between 8.30-9.15 and 3.15-4.00 in term time only; a no left turn will also operate on Southern Street also during these times.

Vehicles will not be able to enter the streets during the times of operation unless they have an exemption.  Vehicles without an exemption will receive a penalty charge notice.
