Making it happen for cleaner, safer and more welcoming neighbourhoods
A series of targeted, resident-led clean-ups is helping Make it Happen, as the council continues to put resident priorities at the heart of its work.
Islington Council is working hard to clean up the borough to create a cleaner, safer, more welcoming place for everyone. To do this it is listening to feedback from local people and encouraging residents, businesses and visitors to help keep Islington’s streets clean and report any issues.
This week the council’s teams are out and about on targeted community clean-ups, carried out in town centres including Finsbury Park, Angel, Hornsey Road, Old Street and Nag’s Head. These clean ups are improving some of the borough’s busiest public spaces and addressing issues local people have highlighted through social media and reporting.
The council is encouraging people to report any issues they notice so they can be addressed via the Love Clean Streets App or online via MyIslington.
Cllr Rowena Champion, Islington Council’s Executive Member for Climate, Environment, and Transport, said: “These two weeks of targeted action have been about really listening to residents, and acting on what they’ve told us to deliver, tangible improvements.
“By focusing on the streets and spaces people flagged to us directly, we’ve been able to target our efforts and deliver improvements that really matter to our communities.
“This is what Making it Happen looks like in practice - visible action, shaped by residents, to bring about a more equal borough for all.
“We want people to take pride in their communities and let us know if they notice any issues – report and we’ll sort it!”
Alongside the deep cleans, the council is continuing to invest in longer-term improvements to street cleanliness, backed by £820,000 from the Making it Happen fund to support community clean‑ups, tackle problem areas, and improve neighbourhoods over the next four years.
Local people can get involved in keeping their streets clean by reporting issues they notice via the Love Clean Streets App or MyIslington. To stay up to date with the latest volunteering opportunities or to learn more about how they can help make Islington cleaner, safer and healthier, local people can sign up to the council’s environment email bulletin.
