Market pop-ups set to champion Black-owned businesses
A series of pop-up markets celebrating Black-owned businesses is returning to Islington, bringing music, food, fashion and more with a launch event at Whitecross Street Market.
Delivered in partnership with Go Africa, the events aim to champion local Black entrepreneurs, showcase creativity and culture, and support inclusive economic growth across the borough.
The first market launches during Black History Month at Whitecross Street Market on Wednesday, 29 October ,11am–5pm.
Expect a lively day of live music, dance competitions, and a wide range of local traders offering handcrafted jewellery, natural skincare, fashion, art, and authentic cultural dishes. Five more events will be delivered before the end of March 2026 at Whitecross Street Market and Chapel Market.
Cllr Santiago Bell-Bradford, Executive Member for Inclusive Economy, Culture and Jobs, said: “These markets are a brilliant example of how we’re building a more equal Islington by supporting local Black entrepreneurs and celebrating the culture and creativity that make our borough so vibrant.
“By investing in community wealth and inclusive growth, we’re helping to create opportunities that benefit everyone.”
This year’s lineup includes Just Vibez, Edna Samuel’s, Colourflow Strokez, Beulah’s Kitchen, Flake’s Fashion, Tsara, J4Jay Skincare, Hair Today & Hair Tomorrow, and Ghana’s Fresh.
Anna Njie, Director of Go Africa, said: “This market series shines a light on the creativity and passion within our Black business community. It’s more than a shopping experience — it’s a celebration of identity, culture and connection.”
The Black-Owned Business Market Series is funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which supports local businesses and invests in communities to build pride in place and expand opportunities for residents across the UK.
