Mayor statement on Alsen Carnival

Mayor of Islington Council, Cllr Richard Greening, said: “If ever there was an event that sums up our commitment to make Islington a place where everyone has the same opportunity to enjoy a good quality of life it’s Carnival at the Alsen Day Centre. Many of our service users used to attend the Notting Hill Carnival, since its inception in 1966, as it was a high point of their social calendar. Sadly, by 2002, some were no longer able to attend due to health and mobility issues. So we decided to bring the Carnival to them. Over the years the event has become so popular we now have to prevent overcrowding!”

Notes to editors

New Park Day Centre had its first carnival in 2002. The Whittington Park Steel Band (which play at the actual Notting Hill Carnival) has been performing there since its inception.
