Move to 4 week UK-wide lockdown: Leaders statement

Cllr Richard Watts, leader of Islington Council, said:

“As the country prepares to go into another four-week lockdown, I want to take this opportunity to thank residents for their patience and resilience in these very difficult times, and to pay tribute to each and every person who has helped support our community during Islington’s coronavirus response so far.

“As we have heard the Prime Minister and the country’s chief medical officers outline over the weekend, infection rates continue to rise at unsupportable levels in Islington and across the country and if we do not act now, the loss of life is predicted to be much higher than we have previously seen.

“I want to emphasise the seriousness of the situation; Covid-19 is a real, deadly disease that can affect everyone, including people who are otherwise healthy. It is important that we do everything that we can to stop the spread of this awful disease as well as to protect those who are most vulnerable. This means that wherever possible we need to stay home and reduce our day-to-day contact with other people so that we can avoid overwhelming the NHS and save lives. We must also not forget to keep on washing our hands, wearing a face covering in public places and keeping 2m apart from others when we do have to go out. We are a strong community here in Islington, and we will get through this new round of lockdown measures by looking out for and supporting each other.

“We know that the coming weeks will be incredibly difficult for many people, but the council is here to help anyone who is struggling to cope. If you, or someone you know needs support, please call We Are Islington on 020 7527 8222 or minicom on 020 7527 1900.

“This year has already given us ample proof of how people in Islington step up and support each other in difficult times. We will get through the coming weeks by keeping that strong community spirit alive and supporting each other as we each continue to do our part to keep ourselves and our community safe.”
