New Executive appointments to continue drive for more equal Islington
Two councillors are starting new roles in Islington’s Executive today (Friday, 16 May), to support the council’s work to create a more equal borough.
Cllr Flora Williamson, who has served as the council’s health and social care lead since last May, has become the new Executive Member for Finance and Performance.
A Tollington ward councillor since 2014, Cllr Williamson has also served as the Chair of the Policy and Performance Committee, where she led scrutiny and direction on how the council approaches funding challenges facing local government. Before joining the Executive, Cllr Williamson spent nearly 15 years specialising in fundraising for charities.
She succeeds Cllr Diarmaid Ward, who has stepped down from the Executive after nine years.
Meanwhile, Cllr Williamson’s previous post as Executive Member for Health and Social Care has been filled by Cllr Dr Sara Hyde.
Cllr Dr Hyde was elected as a councillor for Caledonian ward in 2018, and has chaired the council’s Standards Committee. She previously worked in the prison sector – particularly around women in prison, deaths in custody, and using the arts for rehabilitation.
Cllr Una O’Halloran, Leader of Islington Council, said: “Flora and Sara both bring a wealth of experience, passion, and commitment to creating a more equal Islington, and I have no doubt they’ll thrive in their new roles.
“At a time when councils are facing immense challenges in balancing their budgets and in delivering much needed social care, their leadership will be crucial in helping to create a borough where everyone, whatever their background, can thrive."
Both appointments were confirmed at last night’s (Thursday, 15 May) Full Council meeting. A full list of Executive Members and responsibilities is available on the council’s website.
