New Mayor for Islington

Councillor Kat Fletcher has become Islington’s newest Mayor.

The Councillor for St George’s, in the west of the borough, was sworn in at the Annual Council meeting on 12 May. The Rev. Melanie Toogood, formerly of St George and All Saints Church, will be her consort.

Cllr Fletcher, who lives in Tufnell Park, was first elected in a by-election in March 2013 and then re-elected the year after. Last year she became Deputy Mayor and served as Vice Chair of the council’s Planning Committee.

Each Mayor chooses a specific charity to support and raise funds for throughout his or her year of office. Cllr Fletcher’s charity will be The Ben Kinsella Trust, which was set up by the family of murdered teen Ben Kinsella, to tackle knife-crime in London.

The Ben Kinsella Exhibition is currently based in Finsbury Library, EC1V.

Cllr Fletcher said: “I am delighted to become the Mayor of Islington, which really is a tremendous honour.

“Islington is such a great place to live, and the Mayor has a fortunate opportunity to meet so many local people and community groups, seeing first-hand the fantastic contributions they make to our borough.

“I am especially pleased that I will be able to help support the Ben Kinsella Trust as the Mayor’s charity this year. Tackling knife crime and keeping our young people safe are massive priorities for the council, and the Ben Kinsella Trust does invaluable work in this area.”

Kat will be sharing her experience, as Mayor, on a newly launched Twitter account @IslingtonMayor.

The new Deputy Mayor will be Caledonian ward councillor, Una O’Halloran, and her husband Ray will become the Deputy Mayor’s Consort.
