New recruits to help keep council homes ship-shape

Ten new recruits, aged 16-24, are all set to help keep Islington council homes in tip-top condition as they embark upon a new traineeship programme with the council and local partners. 

 

Four of the ten new trainees will spend the next 10 weeks on the traineeship programme, learning valuable vocational skills with the council’s housing repairs, waste and recycling, and ‘voids’ teams – which inspects recently emptied council homes for required maintenance work. 

 

The other six will start to learn their craft with the council’s contracted partners – Mears, Morgan Sindall, Eurocontractors, and Lightside – specialising in property repairs and construction and regeneration.

 

Young people enrolled on the programme will spend two days a week in City & Islington college, studying English and Maths, and receiving support writing their CV and applying for jobs. 

 

Islington Council’s executive member for economic development, Cllr Asima Shaikh, said: “We owe it to our young people to give them the help they need to get the careers they deserve.

 

“We’re also committed to ensuring our residents have decent homes to live in, so this traineeship scheme is the perfect way to help achieve two council priorities at once.

 

“Good luck to all our new recruits for the weeks ahead.” 

 

Those who successfully complete their traineeship will be able to apply for an apprenticeship with local partner organisations.
