Older residents celebrate life of local legend, Beatles Producer George Martin

Regulars of Islington’s New Park Day Centre for older people had a chance to twist and shout on Wednesday  – at a tribute concert for legendary Beatles producer, George Martin, who passed away last month.

The concert was a chance for older residents to come together, with a little help from their friends, and celebrate the music of the man – a Highbury resident, born in Holloway Road – behind one of history’s most popular bands.

They were not left disappointed as local group, The Healthy Generations Band, led them on a magical mystery tour of classics such as A Hard Day's Night, Can't Buy Me Love, and I Feel Fine.

Lloyd Coombes, who manages the centre, run by Islington Council, said: “Roll over Beethoven, because anytime, anytime at all, our regulars and attendees love to have a party and listen to some good Rock and Roll Music.

“A concert like this is just another day in the life at New Park Day Centre, 24/7, eight days a week.”

Many of those in attendance were visiting from the neighbouring centre, Daylight, also run by Islington Council, and known for its yearly theatre productions starring some of its regular service users.

Ms Lina Guarnierie, who has been a regular at New Park for more than six years, said of the centre: “Whatever we need or would like we get it, if it's possible. They really try to meet our needs.”

Her friend, Ms Alice Mansfield, another New Park attendee, agreed and added: "I like it very much here. It's lovely here and the staff are lovely."
